How to get to Aldermaston
- Foot
- If dropped by bus in Franklin Avenue, walk west to Bishopswood Road
(where the Basingstoke buses will drop you). From latter, walk north to
main A340 road alongside base and head west (left) for West Gate (and
peace camps), or right for Main Gate (some other demos). For peace
camps, cross road where you can, probably further along by one of the
gates into the West Gate car park area (Tadley gate). Keep
walking around the corner of the base/fence (where there's a
roundabout), and you will come to another gate into the West Gate
carpark (Home Office gate): just beyond that, follow the fence
to the right, away from the road, where there's a wood (and new bollards
to prevent cars getting on-site): that is where the peace camp will
(initially at least) be based. (The women's peace camp is 10-15 minutes
further along the fence, near the next gateway in the outer perimeter
fence.)
- Train
- Nearest train stations are Aldermaston and Mortimer (latter more
frequently served), but unless you want a long walk from the station (or
can get a lift), buses from Basingstoke or Reading will be more
use. Times and live 'departure boards' from www.nationalrail.co.uk,
tickets from your local station or a site like Chester-le-Track. If
coming from a distance, get tickets well in advance, and look for
cheaper single tickets. If buying months in advance, your local
station will tell you whether cheap tickets are yet available (for East
Coast main line, GNER site will also
tell you). If coming from Scotland (or northern England via
Carlisle/Edinburgh), you may be able to get Bargain Berths on the
overnight trains to London (Caledonian Sleeper), which are
sometimes very cheap, and only available online, at www.firstscotrail.com.
Generally best station for bus connections to Aldermaston/Tadley is
Basingstoke (see below).
- Bus
- You can get buses to Tadley from Reading (about 1/hour, not Sundays)
or Basingstoke (3/hour, or 1-2/hour Sundays, including quite late
evenings, and a quicker journey). Buses also run from Newbury (but much
less frequently, may end up having to go via Basingstoke!). For all
buses, get times from traveline
website or telephone 0870 6082608. From Basingstoke get the
number 1, on opposite side of road below the station (near entrance to
shopping centre), from Reading you want the 143. Buses from Reading and
Basingstoke both stop on Bishopswood Road: Reading buses will stop near
the shops (further from AWE); Basingstoke buses go down Bishopswood Road
in the oppposite direction, best to get off at first stop, else at the
shops. (From Basingstoke, you will travel along road running near fence
of base just before Bishopswood Road, shortly after passing Sainsbury's
in Tadley, which is a long drawn-out sort of place). Bishopswood Road
is marked by a red telephone box.
- Car
- You can use (transport
direct) for roads information. If coming by car, consider
bringing containers of drinking water for camp if possible, and park
(with care) on the verge near Home Office gate.
